If your home has been damaged by a flood, you need to be careful when you go back to your home. There are a few things that you need after a flood to protect yourself and your home.

#1 Call Your Insurance Agent

The first thing that you need to do is call your insurance agent. You need to let them know that your home was impacted by the flood. Even if you have not been back to your home yet, calling your insurance agent will get you on the list to have an adjuster sent out to your home.

Continue to stay in touch with your insurance agent, sending them pictures and updating them on the damage to your home. After major flooding, the insurance company's adjusters may be stretched a little thin, so the more documentation you can do on your own, the better.

#2 Be Careful Going Back Into Your Home

You need to be careful going back into your home. It can take a while for flood waters to recede. If any flood waters are still present, you don't know what they are carrying with them. Sewage, fire ants, and snakes are just a few of things that you may encounter when you walk through receding flood water to get to your home.

You should wear high-knee boots to protect your feet and legs. You should wear long-sleeved shirts and pants. You should have gloves to protect your hands, and even goggles and a face mask on. You really don't know what you are going to encounter, and you need to protect your health first.

#3 Be Aware of Dangers

Be aware of dangers as you approach your home. After flooding, it is common for flash floods as well as landslides to occur after a major flood. Make sure that you are protecting yourself and are aware of the dangers. If a road is washed out or still covered in water, find another way to your home or wait for the water to go down or the road to get fixed before you attempt to go back to your home.

#4 Save What You Can

Next, when you get to your home, save what you can. Remove items from your home that have not been impacted by the flood water or are not seriously damaged. They could quickly become victims of mold and mildew as you go about the process of cleaning your home. Remove everything that is still working well from your home before you start throwing away everything in your home that is damaged.
